REFRACTORY GATING SYSTEM
INTROUDUCTION
A foundry brick is a specific shaped refractory which is used in metal castings. Metals are cast into foundry bricks by melting them into a liquid, pouring the metal in a mould, and removing the mould material or casting after the metal has solidified as it cools. The most common metals processed are aluminium and cast iron. However, other metals, such as bronze, brass, steel, magnesium, and zinc, are also used to produce castings in foundries. In this process, parts of desired shapes and sizes can be formed.
MANUFACTURE
In the making of foundry brick, fireclay is fired in the kiln until it is partly vitrified, and for special purposes may also be glazed. Sprue, Bend and Tee are the standard shapes of Foundry brick.
COMPOSITION
Foundry bricks have an aluminium oxide content that can be as high as 50–80% (with correspondingly less silica).
